This Week’s Highlights

Speaker: Visiting Rotarian Sophie Qian

Topic: Training for Educators in Rural China

With the rapid development in China, the difference between urban
schools an rural schools is larger than ever. In order to concentrate
educational resources, the Compulsory School Merger Program of the
Education Reform Initiative (2001-2012) has removed 371,470 schools, in
which 81% was rural schools. The impacts are huge. Super large schools
with 1000+ students, increased learning costs and psychological health
of students has became an issue. Rural children are facing more
challenges such as limited resources, high ratio of “left-behind”
children, shortage of qualified teachers, etc.

The Shin Shin Educational Foundation (SSEF) was founded in 1997 in
California, focused on improve learning environment to promote balanced
development of urban and rural education in China. Up to now, SSEF has
rebuilt or renovated 345 rural schools in 25 provinces. Shin
Shin programs has three categories: school development, teacher
education and student activity. RC Cupertino has been working closely
with Shin Shin from the beginning, deeply involved in many programs.
Rotarians in Beijing could get involved by joining the site visit to
Jiangxi Province in July, help seek qualified teachers for vocational
teacher training or teach as online trainers. You could also donate
English books or make a cash donation to the Shin Shin Educational
