This Week’s Highlights

Speaker: Alec Ash
Topic: Generational trends shaping young China today, and how it connects to China’s historical legacy of youth and change

Our speaker Alec Ash presented Wish Lanterns, his nonfiction book published by Picador in 2016 and a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, that follows six young Chinese, born between 1985 and 1990.

He went into more detail on two of them: Lucifer and Fred. Lucifer is an artist who was born into a Hebei working class family. He rose to national fame as the frontman of Rustic, a rock band that won the Global Battle of the Bands award in 2011. The group was invited to perform in China, Europe and the United States. Since they broke up, Lucifer hs kept pursuing his dream of becoming a superstar by appearing on TV and performing as a musician in various genres.

Fred’s story is very different. As the daughter of a Chinese official she grew up in a privileged environment, studied politics at Peking University and wanted to be an academic like her mother. During her time in college she came to discover the contradictions between what she had been taught at home, what she learnt at Beida outside of class rooms and the indifference of many of her fellow students.

As interesting as these characters are they don’t represent their generation which is a group of about 320 m people – as big as the whole population of the United States. So while it is not possible to generalise, one thing is for sure: this generation and their experience of growing up in a very different country than their parents will affect the future of China.
